the photos are gone - 2026/02/15
gah! yesterday, i took some great photos in puerto rico. we climbed el yunque, as well as went to the beach and swam in the ocean at sunset. i took some photos on my tiny kodak camera, called the charmera. here's what it looks like:

i wanted to post some of these to the blog today, but when i went to plug in my camera to my phone, i noticed they didn't show up in my photos app or in the file explorer. i then tried to plug it into my desktop, no dice there either. "annoying", i thought, but imagined it was probably something i could fix when i was at home. however, when i went to browse the photos on the camera itself, i noticed all my photos disappeared!
upon searching reddit, it seems that plugging the camera into an iphone will lead to the sd card being formatted in a weird way that causes data corruption. tragically, this also means that these photos are likely goners.
what sucks most is that i had photos not just from puerto rico, but from a bunch of memories and trips over the past year, including my trips to china, japan, as well as from my time living in both vancouver and nyc. while none of these photos were great from a photography or even memory standpoint, i think it just always sucks to lose something you can never get back again. a lot of these photos were likely of moments that were relatively mundane, and without those photos i probably will have forgotten those memories in a few years. even if it's a given that we forget most of the life we live, the fact that i could've had those few extra moments makes all the difference. i was stupid not to offload them sooner.
once i'm back home, i'm gonna try doing some data recovery. fingers crossed some of them get saved.
