Tune Tuesday #?? - Telescope - 2026/02/24

When I was writing the tune tuesday for this week, I thought it would be a good idea to get high. Given that I was planning on writing a live first impressions, I can see how sleepy Cyrus thought it would be an opportunity to capitalize on how great music sounds when high. However, I made the mistake of smoking a joint of someone else's sofa cushion kush, and whatever was in there knocked me the fuck out. I think I lasted a total of 2 minutes while listening to the album before passing out.

When I woke up the next morning, I was pretty annoyed at myself for failing to post on time yet again (I don't know why I even kid myself around these post dates, it's pretty much a meek attempt at trying to recover from outward failure lol). I was about to start all over again, but I thought that just posting whatever I had prior to the knockout was both more interesting and in line with the challenge of floor-it february. I will just leave it as is, and I think I'll kill Tune Tuesday for now. So here's what I wrote that night, enjoy!

Welcome to Tune Tuesday #3! Instead of posting my ramblings on a random album I've listened to a hundred times, today I wanted to try something new and post my real time reaction to an album I've never heard before. Specifically, I'll be listening to Olivia O.'s recent album Telescope. I had come to know of Olivia through a sign crushes motorist show in Seattle back in 2024, where she played the opening act. Taking advantage of loopers, she started off with just some atmospheric lyricless vocals, then slowly introduced more and more vocal layers until it was a full bodied choir. Then, by slowly adding things like flute, guitar, drums, etc., you were soon listening to a 20-track band-adjacent track. Seeing her process live gave me goosebumps, and instantly had a strong impression on me. It's no surprise that she ended up stealing the sign crushes motorist show, with most people commenting on her being the surprise highlight of the night.

I would later learn that Olivia is actually one of the two people behind the project Lowertown, which made one of my standout 2021 albums, The Gaping Mouth. While I won't be talking about that today, please do give the title track of that album a listen! I promise the music is much more approachable than the album cover would suggest:

Anyways, enough about Olivia O.'s old stuff, I'm excited to give this new album a listen!

Track 1 - Lullaby

So far loving how lofi + feeble the guitar

Lol, and that was it. I woke up with the lights still on and my laptop dropped on the floor. I've been so sleep deprived as of late, there's no surprise here that I would fall asleep while high and listening to slow music late at night. The irony of instantly falling asleep on the first track aptly called Lullaby.

Aside from just being a flop, I think in reflecting on whether I would try again or just post what I have, I'm now realizing that I don't really have much fun talking about music through long form post. While I think I have lots of things to say about certain albums, I feel most of the time a lot of those comments are really just distractions from the actual experience of listening to the music itself. I find myself struggling to properly capture how it feels to listen to those albums using words, and instead resort to more cerebral analysis that isn't particularly fulfilling re: trying to express how I feel. There are certainly many albums that I would want to talk about extensively in future, and there'll also certainly be times where I'll just want to post without much commentary. However, I just don't think I love the idea of "tune tuesday" as a recurring segment, so I plan on ending it as series here. How I talk about music will likely be format-less from here on out, and I hope that means that I'll end up only writing about music in a way that does justice to the art itself.
